Computer and AI skills for students in Kenya

Together with Kenya Keys, we give students in Taru, Kenya a laptop of their own and a week of hands-on training in the AI tools that are changing how people work. The laptops come from Croatian companies that no longer need them, and the students keep them.

How it works

A simple idea. A lasting impact.

  1. 1

    Kenya Keys selects the students

Our partner Kenya Keys selects 30 to 50 students in their final year of secondary school, hosts the program and leads everything on the ground.

  2. 2

    Companies donate working laptops

Croatian companies donate surplus laptops. We test each one, securely wipe the data, fit chargers for Kenyan sockets and ship only fully working devices, legally and with complete paperwork.

  3. 3

    A week of AI skills

Five days at the Kenya Keys Community Education Center, led by entrepreneurs and AI professionals from our network: research, writing, design and building a first app with AI.

  4. 4

A laptop and a community that stay

Students keep their laptops and join an alumni community with mentors, founders and startup hubs. More laptops equip the center’s computer lab for the whole community.

Our partner: Kenya Keys

Kenya Keys supports students in Taru from primary school all the way to university. Its Community Education Center is a 1,400 m² building with solar power, internet and a computer lab open to the whole community. The lab has 10 laptops today, and together we want to bring it to 60.

Kenya Keys selects the students, hosts the program and leads locally. Sparkminds brings the laptops, the funding for devices, shipping and travel, and the workshop leaders and mentors. We do not ask Kenya Keys for funding.

It is not just about a laptop. It is about the community: we give students the tools, the people and the motivation to shape their future.

What students learn

Five days of AI skills

  1. Day 1

    AI at work

How AI is changing jobs and careers. Students set up their laptop and a first AI assistant, and we cover the computer basics quickly.

  2. Day 2

    Research with AI

Asking good questions, checking answers against other sources and spotting where AI gets things wrong.

  3. Day 3

    Create with AI

Writing, presentations, design and images, with AI as a creative partner.

  4. Day 4

    Build with AI

In teams, students pick a real problem in their community and build an app or website with AI coding tools.

  5. Day 5

    Demo day

Teams present their projects to founders, teachers and families, and join the alumni community.

We shape the program together with Kenya Keys so it fits the students and the school calendar. Students leave with a laptop of their own, hands-on experience with AI tools and the judgement to check AI answers and use it responsibly.

Where we are now

Updated October 2026

We have agreed a partnership with Kenya Keys. The first pilot week is planned for mid-February 2027 at their Community Education Center in Taru. We are now collecting laptops and preparing the shipment.

  1. Done

    Partnership with Kenya Keys

Kenya Keys hosts the pilot at its Community Education Center in Taru and selects the students.

  2. Now

    Collecting laptops

Croatian companies donate, and we test, wipe and document every device and fit chargers for Kenyan sockets.

  3. Now

    Confirming the import route

Together with Kenya Keys, we confirm in writing how the laptops are imported and received legally.

  4. Next

    Shipping to Taru

The laptops clear customs and reach the Community Education Center before the pilot week.

  5. Mid-February 2027

    Pilot week in Taru

Five days of AI skills for 30 to 50 graduating students, who each keep their laptop.

  6. Later

    Alumni community and follow-up

Students stay connected with mentors and startup hubs. We report to Kenya Keys after the pilot and again after six months.

Our rule: we ship only once the import route is confirmed in writing, and we agree the exact number of laptops with Kenya Keys first.

Our principles

Guided by what matters

  • Led locally

Kenya Keys knows its students and community best. It shapes the program with us and leads it on the ground.

  • AI with judgement

Students learn the AI tools professionals use every day, and how to check what AI tells them.

  • Only working equipment

Every laptop is tested, wiped and documented. We never send e-waste.

  • Safety and privacy

Supervision, consent and Kenya Keys’ rules come first. No photos of students without permission.

  • Pilot before scale

We start with one cohort in Taru, measure honestly and grow only as fast as our partners want.
